ProgramsOutreach Program

The River’s Outreach Program provides Teaching Artists for schools, hospitals and community-based organizations on a regular basis during the school year. Sites receive classes in one discipline of the arts; either visual art, dance, drama, or music. 

In 2009, the Outreach Program has provided fine arts education to more than 1,400 special children in the Greater Houston area.  Sites served through Outreach in 2009 include: 

  • Arbor School - special needs
  • Beverly Hills Intermediate School - special needs
  • Center for Hearing and Speech - hearing and speech disorders
  • Chabad House- special needs
  • Conroe YMCA special needs
  • Down Syndrome Association of Houston - Down Syndrome
  • Harris County Psychiatric Center-adolescent residential program for mental illness
  • Harris School - sociallly and/or emotionally challenged; i.e., autism, pervasive developmental delay, bipolar, depression, & others
  • HealthBridge Children’s Hospital - patients with chronic medically complex conditions
  • Houston Area Women’s Center survivors of domestic abuse
  • Monarch School - neurological differences; i.e., learning disabilities, autism, pervasive developmental delay, etc.
  • Rise School - Down Syndrome
  • Sam Rayburn High School - special needs
  • Shriner's Childrens Hospital - patients with orthopedic or burn injuries
  • Texas Children’s Cancer Center - patients with cancer or  hematological disorders
  • Wesley Community Center Inc. - economically disadvantaged
  • Wharton Elementary School - economically disadvantaged
  • The Woodlands United Methodist Church - special needs
